Make Your Own Montessori Moveable Alphabet

When I saw the prices for a Montessori Moveable Alphabet I was shocked! The price can be as high as $75 retail from a Montessori store. I love the idea of an alphabet that is organized in a box so that each letter can be found easily. I also wanted an alphabet that we could use for many types of lessons in the future, so it couldn't be cheaply made. I wanted something thicker than cardstock or laminated paper. I created my own Moveable Alphabet with foam magnetic letters. The magnetic backing makes it heavier and sturdier, easier to work with, and also being magnetic is convenient. They can get wet, they carry extra vowels, and uppercase letters which I used for a different activity. I got them here for $12.99 but the price on them changes.

What you need:

  • Fishing tackle box or jewelry bead box with 24 or more squares. The squares on my box measure just under 2 1/4 inch heighth and width.
  • Magnetic Foam Letters with extra vowels and at least 2 of every letter. The tallest and widest letters are just under 2 inches.

What you do:

  1. Put one letter in each box. since many boxes are only 24 squares you can put "i" and "j" together and "k" and "l" together.
There are hundreds of ways to use a moveable alphabet, from adding the right vowel to a list of words or creating your words or learning the difference between p,b,q, and d.

Optional Tip: Write the letter at the bottom of each square so that your child can put the letter back into the correct square on their own.
